Seismic AVO analysis of methane hydrate structures

چکیده
Marine seismic data from the Blake Outer Ridge offshore Florida show strong “bottom simulating reflections” (BSR) associated with methane hydrate occurence in deep marine sediments. We use a detailed amplitude versus offset (AVO) analysis of these data to explore the validity of models which might explain the origin of the bottom simulating reflector. After careful preprocessing steps, we determine a BSR model which can successfully reproduce the observed AVO responses. The Pand S-velocity behavior predicted by the forward modeling is further investigated by estimating the Pand S-impedance contrasts at all subsurface positions. Our results indicate that the Blake Outer Ridge BSR is compatible with a model of methane hydrate in sediment, overlaying a layer of free methane gas-saturated sediment. The hydrate-bearing sediments seem to be characterized by a high P-wave velocity of approximately 2.5 km/s, an anomalously low S-wave velocity of approximately 0.5 km/s, and a thickness of around 190 meters. The underlaying gas-saturated sediments have a P-wave velocity of 1.6 km/s, an S-wave velocity of 1.1 km/s, and a thickness of approximately 250 meters.

Identification of Gas Accumulation Adjacent to the Gas Hydrate Bearing Zone by Inversion Utilizing AVO Attribute
The presence of gas hydrate and associated gas in the Makran Accretionary Prism, offshore Iran, has been confirmed by various seismic indicators, including the bottom-simulating reflector (BSR), amplitude blanking, and bright spot. The pre-stack analysis and the study of amplitude-variation-with-offset (AVO) attributes are the most reliable tools for semi-quantitative study of gas hydrate and f...

We quantify natural methane hydrate reservoirs by generating synthetic seismic traces and comparing them to real seismic data: if the synthetic matches the observed data, then the reservoir properties and conditions used in synthetic modeling might be the same as the actual, in-situ reservoir conditions. This approach is model-based: it uses rock physics equations that link the porosity and min...

Seismic analysis of data from the Blake Outer Ridge indicates the presence of hydratebearing sediments overlaying gas-saturated sediments in this region. In an attempt to determine possible lateral and vertical variations of the hydrate and gas sediments, I performed a 2-D velocity analysis along two approximately perpendicular seismic lines. Subsequent determination of the seafloor and BSR ref...
متن کاملMethane hydrate rock physics models for the Blake Outer Ridge
Seismic analyses of methane hydrate data from the Blake Outer Ridge indicate high Pwave velocity and anomalously low S-wave velocity in sediments containing methane hydrates. In an attempt to explain this observed P-wave and S-wave velocity structure at the transition from gas to hydrates, the effect of different hydrate models on elastic moduli and velocities are explored. After construction o...
متن کاملUncorking the bottle: What triggered the Paleocene/Eocene thermal maximum methane release?
The Paleocene/Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) was a time of rapid global warming in both marine and continental realms that has been attributed to a massive methane (CH4) release from marine gas hydrate reservoirs. Previously proposed mechanisms for this methane release rely on a change in deepwater source region(s) to increase water temperatures rapidly enough to trigger the massive thermal diss...
